In recent years, the international community has witnessed a series of devastating armed conflicts involving Ukraine and Russia, Israel and Palestine, Israel and Lebanon, Israel and Iran, the United States and Iran, among others. These wars, characterized by the deployment of advanced military technologies, have resulted in significant civilian casualties, widespread environmental degradation, large-scale displacement of populations, and disruptions to international trade, investment, and development. Such developments present grave challenges to international peace and security and pose significant obstacles to sustainable global progress.
These conflicts raise pressing legal and ethical concerns. It is neither morally defensible nor legally permissible under international law for militarily powerful states to unilaterally resort to the use of force against less powerful states without due regard for the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Article 51 of the UN Charter recognizes the inherent right of states to self-defence, affirming the sovereign equality of all nations and the importance of collective security.
In this context, the present webinar aims to provide a platform for critical engagement with the legal foundations, contemporary practices, and future trajectories of the right of self-defence under international law. By drawing on the perspectives of international legal scholars, practitioners, and students, this event seeks to foster informed discussion on how international law can contribute meaningfully to the regulation of force and the promotion of global peace and justice.
