About AALCO

The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO), originally known as the Asian Legal Consultative Committee (ALCC), was constituted on 15 November 1956.

It is considered to be a tangible outcome of the historic Bandung Conference, held in Indonesia, in April 1955.

About the Opportunity

AALCO has opened up applications for the position of Assistant Legal Officers/ Legal Officers to work with them.

As a junior lawyer at the Secretariat, you are working on real questions of state practice and multilateral processes, often with direct exposure to government delegations.

For anyone looking to enter public international law from India, this is still one of the most grounded and practical starting points.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Follows and analyses new developments in the field of public international law as related to the work  and agenda of the AALCO, performs extensive legal research and analysis and prepares legal opinions, studies, briefs, reports, publications and correspondence as requested by the management;
  • Prepares legal opinion on diverse substantive and procedural questions related to the work of  the AALCO;
  • Provides legal opinion in one or more areas of public international law, in particular, law of  international organizations, law of dispute settlement, law of treaties, and international trade  law;
  • Cooperates with the legal team in organizing diplomatic conferences, working groups, expert   groups, training courses and other initiatives, including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, meeting reports, etc.;
  • Assists other legal officers in the design of programme activities and project management  with respect to the legal matters on the agenda of the AALCO;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Eligibility Criteria

  • General competencies and work experience: Integrity, professionalism, strong analytical skills and a sense of teamwork are necessary. The Assistant Legal Officer/Legal Officer is also expected to have an adequate knowledge of public international law to conduct comprehensive legal research on a wide range of issues related to the agenda of the AALCO, as well as proficiency in legal drafting and editing, and the ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent projects.
  • Prior work experience in legal matters, including legal analysis, research and writing related to public international law issues is a privilege.
  • Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree/equivalent or higher) in international law or related fields is required. Specialization in any field of public international law is a privilege. Academic publications including books and articles on international law issues related to Asia and Africa are a value.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English (both oral and written) and legal drafting is required.
  • Age Limit: 35 Years. 
  • Nationality: Only Indian citizen can apply.
