While many universities have already started and some have even conducted the final year examination, the states of Delhi, Maharashtra and Odisha are waiting for the Supreme Court judgement.

UGC Case in Supreme Court: Key points

  1. Petitioners are arguing that the final year examinations should be cancelled as the situtation is not conducive
  2. 4 states have replied to the petitions, stating that they would not allow the examinations to be conducted as the coronavirus cases in the state are increasig raidly
  3. UGC has contested that the States do not have the authority to cancel the examination
  4. As degrees are granted by UGC, it has argued that as per the statute, UGC is well within its right to order the examinations. As for the Disaster Management Act, the counsel has argued that the Central Government takes precedence over State Government
  5. UGC has further stated that while the states can ask for the examinations to be postponed, however, no degrees can be awarded without conducting any examination

11 students from across the country had approached the Supreme Court for intervention in the matter.
