November,8,2016:Supreme Court has today defined Delhi pollution as “dreaded”, “severe” and “disaster”. It has sought the response of Centre Govt. on what it itends to do on it and what is its policy to tackle pollution in two days.
Apex court also highlighted the various measures and suggestions submitted by Sunita Narain, the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) and other parties concerned.
Beench asked the government to come up with a Common Minimum Programme within 48 hours on how it is going to tackle the situation.
Bench is likely to pass a detailed directions after receiving government’s response.
During the Day National Green Tribunal banned all the construction activities in Delhi for a week apart from National Capital Region to check and contain the alarming rise in pullotion level.
Bench highlighted that Delhi’s air quality has steadily worsened soon after Diwali.
Other than smoke from crackers’, burning of crop stubble in farms has also contributed to the thick cover of hazardous smog and haze that has covered the city now for nearly a week.
The air quality levels of harmful PM 2.5 particles is now touching a very dangerous levels,like world's polluted cities like Beijing.
These fine polluting particles of less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter are linked to higher rates of chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and heart disease.
