On Friday, the Apex Court sought responses from media regulatory bodies Press Council of India & News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) on a plea filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind accusing the media & social media of communalising the Tablighi Jamaat issue by using phrases like “corona jihad”, “corona terrorism” & “corona bombs” while reporting.

A bench of CJI S A Bobde & Justice A S Bopanna & Justice V Ramasubramanian told Jamiat’s lawyer Dushyant Dave it would prefer reports from regulatory bodies like NBSA which could lay the foundation for examining comparable standards of reporting. But Dave insisted that it was for the information & broadcasting ministry to take action when media & social media platforms were flooded with fake videos.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the petitioner had not pointed out any specific instances of communal reporting & was wrong in seeking a blanket gag order against media.
