Karnataka files plea to modify order directing it to share Cauvery water with TN

The Apex Court has agreed to conduct an early hearing on Monday on the Karnataka government's plea to modify the order asking Karnataka to share Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu.

On Saturday, a few hours before midnight , Karnataka had approached the Apex Court registrar at his residence with their urgent plea for the Supreme court's intervention in the background of unabated turmoil & public unrest in the State, after the order on September 5 to release river Cauvery's water to Tamil Nadu.

The file was placed before the CJI T.S. Thakur on Sunday.

The matter for hearing was referred before Justice Dipak Misra's Bench by the Chief Justice. The bench had passed the September 5 order.

'Order has caused distress to farmers'

It is said by Karnataka that they have already released 15,000 cu-secs of water to Tamil Nadu as a gesture of goodwill . It asserted that Tamil Nadu needs water for storage purpose only while Karnataka was facing a drinking water crisis.

The application demanding modification said that the order had caused really great distress to the public & farmers of Karnataka. It also said that Tamil Nadu's Samba region had sufficient supply of ground water for cultivation of the crop.
