Recently, the Delhi High Court disposed of a writ petition seeking urgent police protection and removal of provocative online content, after the Delhi Police assured comprehensive security measures for the petitioners and confirmed large-scale takedown of inflammatory material linked to an incident in Uttam Nagar. The order underscores the Court’s reliance on real-time police action in defusing potential law-and-order concerns.
The petition arose from allegations that unidentified individuals, including a woman later identified by the complainant, issued threats and were linked to a prior incident involving alleged trespass and removal of belongings. The petitioners sought immediate protection, safeguards for witnesses in connection with an FIR, and deletion of communally sensitive videos circulating on social media. The State, however, maintained that the situation was already under control, citing prior judicial proceedings on the same incident and ongoing monitoring by senior police officials.
The Court took note of the State’s submission that CCTV surveillance had been enhanced, police pickets deployed in the locality, and a dedicated presence ensured near the petitioners’ residence. It also recorded that over 250 objectionable videos had already been taken down, with further action contingent on specific inputs from the complainants. Emphasizing the proactive stance of law enforcement, the Court observed that “the local police is already active and shall ensure best possible protection to the petitioners,” while directing that the SHO remain directly accessible to them.
With an inquiry already underway at the ACP level into the fresh complaint, the Court found no further intervention necessary and formally disposed of the petition.
