July 13,2017:
On Thursday, National Green Tribunal (NGT) has recommended a slew of measures to clean up Ganges, including a fine of Rs 50,000 for dumping waste in Haridwar-Unnao stretch of the river.
The Bench of NGT, headed by the Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, directed the authorities to impose Rs 50,000 for dumping penalty.
NGT has recommended that waste dumping to not be allowed within 500 metres from edge of Ganga on Haridwar-Unnao stretch. In addition, it said that area within 100 metres from edge of the Ganges, on same stretch, be declared as the 'no-development zone' .
The Green Tribunal directed States of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to formulate the guidelines for any religious activities on ghats of Ganga or its tributaries.
In April,2017, Yogi Adityanath Government had favoured moving British-era tanneries to Kanpur.
