Last year 129 non-performing IAS, IPS & other officers were given compulsory retirement by Central Govt.

Central govt. has undertaken an exercise to carefully review the service records of around 67,000 employees, including the IAS & the IPS officers, to identify the non-performers.

This review exercise is a part of the central govt's efforts to further improve the service delivery & governance system.

A senior official in the Department of Personnel & Training said this exercise may result in severe punishment to those who don't conform to the code of conduct framed for them.

"The service records of about 67000 central govt. employees are under review to check the non-performance," the senior official said.

Around 25,000 of these are from all Indian & Group A services - including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service & Indian Revenue Service among others the senior official said.

When contacted by PTI, the Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said while on the 1 hand the govt. approach is of high-level efficiency & "zero-tolerance" towards corruption on the other hand, it's also ensuring work-friendly environment for the honest officers.

He said that "The govt. time to time reviews the performance of its workforce, it's to encourage the honest employees."

Singh said the NDA govt. in its 3 years has introduced multiple relaxations in rules on transfer policy, Leave Travel Concession etc.

The Centre had given compulsory retirement to 129 non-performing officers, IAS & IPS officers among them, in last 1 year.

As per general norms, a govt. employee's performance is reviewed only 2 times during his/her service - after 15 years of qualifying & then after 25 years!

There are around 48,85,000 central govt. employees, according to the latest data.
