Inspired by son of an additional district judge who presented him a book on Thirukkural, a Tamil classic written by Thiruvalluvar, Justice G R Swaminathan of the Madras HC on Monday pledged to memorise at least one couplet from Thirukkural every day.

Calling upon the Bar to join his initiative, Justice Swaminathan said that daily he would name one advocate from the day's cause list who would recite a couplet in his court either at 1.30pm or at 4.45pm.

To start with, the judge who is presently sitting in the Madurai bench of the court named advocate A Thiruvadikumar to recite a couplet on Monday.

According to the notice, Justice Swaminathan happened to meet Pazhamalai, son of additional district judge Semmal & a known name in Tamil literary circles. "He presented me his book on Thirukkural Munuswamy. Read it at one go. I remembered what are all Justice D Hariparanthaman & Justice R Mahadevan told me. I feel as Tamils, we should know at least 52 Kural couplet by heart. I thought I will make a beginning from today," Justice Swaminathan said.
