The Madras High Court has adopted an AI assisted system, ‘Superlaw Courts,’ to streamline document review in the arbitration case of Gammon-OJSC Mosmetrostroy JV vs Chennai Metro Rail Limited, aiming to expedite hearings and reduce manual effort without replacing judicial reasoning.

With the consent of both parties, Justice N Anand Venkatesh allowed the use of Superlaw Courts, an AI algorithm designed to extract, organise, and summarise relevant information strictly from case documents. The system converts scanned or image-based filings into searchable text and highlights key excerpts, enabling counsel and the court to focus on core issues without sifting through voluminous records.

Demonstrated in open court on January 28, the tool will assist in preparing draft orders, verifying facts, and ensuring more efficient responses during proceedings, while maintaining the integrity of legal analysis and professional judgment.

Justice Venkatesh emphasised that the AI system “is intended to reduce the time and effort involved in manual searching and cross-referencing voluminous documents,” but clarified that it “is not intended to replace legal reasoning, judicial determination or counsel’s professional judgement.” The Court and counsel agreed that the algorithm would be used as a supportive tool, with access provided to parties for pinpointing specific issues and verifying draft orders before finalisation.
