July 1,2017:

There is a demand for giving priority to Delhi students in DU admissions.

Delhi Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution that the 85 per cent seats be reserved for the students from capital in the colleges funded by State Government, including the Delhi University.

Passing the resolution, rhe Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia stated that the government will take every step necessary in this direction.

Stating that he had written twice to the Centre, requesting that the preference be given to the Delhi students, Sisodia added that, “In the last letter I wrote to the HRD minister Prakash Javadekar on December 13, 2016, I requested him to give reservation to the students from Delhi in DU admissions.”

Showing the letter to House, he added that he also wrote to the  Former Minister Smriti Irani on this issue.

Several BJP and the Congress leaders, too, have been demanding reservation for the Delhi students in DU colleges over the years.

He said that number of the students passing Class XII was increasing in Delhi every year, but number of the seats in DU remain same. “…Soon, we will set up four more campuses of the Ambedkar University in city,” he stated.

Assembly has also resolved to recommend to Centre to amend DU Act,1922, according to which no other university in Delhi is legally authorised to give the affiliation to any other college.

If Amendment is made, the Universities other than DU can give affiliation to the other colleges.

AAP MLA Jarnail Singh stated that about 25 per cent of State budget goes into expenditure of the 28 government-funded colleges.

Opposition also supported the resolution, with BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa adding that they had made an effort in giving priority to the Delhi students in the DU admissions.
