September,11,2016:

On Sunday, CJI T S Thakur Sunday reiterated his stance that there was an urgent need to increase the number of judges in India, along which we may keep “we may keep inviting FDI and raising slogans about the progress” but still it is utmost important and essential that judicial system should also improve to deal with the disputes arising from such progress.

CJI Thakur while speaking at the First Conference of Judicial Officers at Bilaspur High Court , Chhattisgarh, expounded that the country is facing a huge backlog of 3 crore cases in the Subordinate Courts as there are only 18,000 Judges in the country.

He further added that he has been making passionate appeals at all the public forums even in the presence of Prime Minister Modi  regarding the challeneges the Judiciary faces.

Chief Justice of India further enunciated that far back in the year 1987, Law Commission of India had recommended that there is a need to induct about 40,000 judges into the judicial system but the ground reality after 30 years is that we are still at 18,000.

Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh Deepak Gupta was also in attendance, when CJI Thakur turned the gaze inward and stated that higher judiciary should realise that there should be interaction between those working in the lower courts is important.
