The Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) enforces provisions of the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions (RDDBFI) Act, 1993 and the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interests (SARFAESI) Act, 2002.
Under the RDDBFI Act, 1993, banks approach the Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT), whereas under the SARFAESI Act, 2002, borrowers, guarantors, and any other aggrieved persons can approach the DRT against actions taken by banks.
Debts Recovery Tribunals are located across the country. Some cities have multiple tribunals—New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai have three each, while Ahmedabad and Chandigarh have two each.
Other locations include Allahabad, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Cuttack, Ernakulam, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Lucknow, Madurai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Visakhapatnam, and Ranchi.
Debts Recovery Tribunal offers internships to law undergraduates as well as law graduates to provide a broad, practical understanding of laws relating to recovery of debts due to banks and financial institutions, along with remedies available to borrowers, guarantors, and third parties in banking disputes.
