Zoom Video Communications Inc. and RingCentral Inc. have finally shaken hands in a court dispute over RingCentral using continuously Zoom’s video conferencing technology even after Zoom decided not to renew their partnership on this. A joint press release said, “The companies have resolved the case in California Federal Court and will continue to work together while cloud-communications provider RingCentral transitions to a new video-meeting service. A San Jose, California Federal Court filing clearly mentions that they had settled the case amongst themselves.”

RingCentral Chief Administrative Officer John Marlow said in the press release that the customers of the RingCentral Meetings would be provided full support during the whole procedure of transition. Zoom’s general counsel Jeff True stated in the release that the company was delighted on resolving this matter in an amicable manner that further allowed the parties to continue the wind-down of their partnership.

It argued before the court that the company was dangling Zoom in front of potential customers to lure them into signing multi-year contracts with them despite the termination of their deal, and further asked for directions from the court for the payment of an undisclosed amount of money damages and to block RingCentral from using its trademarks in future.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila was hearing the case and later rejected RingCentral’s request. This was challenged by RingCentral before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals which upheld this decision in the month of October. During the whole case, the zoom was represented by Douglas Lumish of Latham & Watkins and RingCentral by Brad Karp, Melinda Haag, and Walter Brown of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; Clement Roberts of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe before the court.

The case can be reached by the name Zoom Video Communications Inc v. RingCentral Inc, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California bearing case no. 5:21-cv-01727.
