April 17,2019:
Calciomercato, representing Inter Milan, has claimed that The Italian Team has filed for a Trademark Infringement lawsuit and are looking to protect the use of “Inter” in the name by other brands.
The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board will analyze the position of both sides and is likely to arrive at one of two decisions.
Either they will ask to register the 'Inter' brand and make it exclusive for a single club - which is what the Nerazzurri are hoping for or as per Calciomercato, would be to 'accept the request of the MLS which, in response to Inter, claims that the name is purely descriptive and is present in many clubs around the world'.
Beckham and his franchise are hoping for the decision that should be made quickly, and their plan is to debut in 2020. As of now, the Inter Miami is overcoming a number of other hurdles as they are preparing to play in next season's MLS. They have successfully bid to acquire Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and will use this site as a temporary home until a new stadium is built for them.
With less than 12 months away from kicking off in the next season, Beckham and his fellow owners are turning their attention to build a squad of competitive and competent players. This will be the final - and the most exciting step of building this franchise.
But this lawsuit is a very unwelcome distraction, at this crucial stage for MLS.
