About the Organizations
The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) is an initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in supporting and contributing to the realization of United Nations goals and mandates, including the promotion and protection of human rights, access to education, sustainability, and conflict resolution.
Millennium Campus Network (MCN), Inc., is a global student network advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. MCN programs convene, challenge, and celebrate student leadership for social impact. It is a global student network addressing humanity’s greatest challenges.
Millennium Fellowship 2021
The United Nations Academic Impact and MCN present the Millennium Fellowship for UG (Under Graduate) student leaders. This program convenes, challenges, and celebrates bold student leadership advancing the Sustainable Development Goals on campus and in communities. It is a semester-long leadership development program on your campus to take your social impact to the next level.
As a Millennium Fellow, you will hone your skills, take concrete action, and earn a certificate of recognition from United Nations Academic Impact and MCN. There is no cost for selected students.
The Class of 2022 application is open and the program will run August-November 2022.
The Millennium Fellowship is a semester-long leadership development program that happens on your campus. The United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are here to elevate your leadership.
More About the Fellowship
- Between admission in August and the conclusion of the program in November 2022, cohorts of Millennium Fellows will convene locally on their respective campuses at least monthly to engage in the leadership development program.
- Fellows will be challenged by Campus Directors to share best practices and take collective action on one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Upon successful completion, each Millennium Fellow will receive recognition of completion for their Millennium Fellowship Project from MCN and UNAI.
- The program will take place on selected campuses worldwide from August 2022 to November 2022. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and eligible students will proceed to the second and final round of the application.
How Does the Millenium Fellowship Program Work?
STEP 1: Application
Each selected campus hub will typically have 8-20 Millennium Fellows (meaning you are strongly encouraged to invite your colleagues and classmates on your campus to apply as well).
When you apply, you are asked to submit your Millennium Fellowship Project. Whatever your project is, it must be time-bound – something you can make a meaningful, measurable impact on during the Millennium Fellowship (August-November) and it must advance at least one Sustainable Development Goal and one UNAI principle. For some examples, it could be (but is not limited to):
- leading your campus organization (for example, a chapter of AIESEC, ENACTUS, UNICEF) that advances UN goals.
- student journalism – writing a series on the Sustainable Development Goals for your campus newspaper.
- running a social enterprise.
- innovative research that concretely advances UN goals.
- proposing a collective action as a Project – a campus-wide and/or community-wide initiative that advances UN goals. For inspiration, learn about Middlebury College’s successful campus-wide action to become carbon neutral by 2016 (advancing SDG 13).
If you want to curate the Millennium Fellowship on your campus, in your fellowship application you can also apply to be one of two campus directors for your campus.
STEP 2: Convene, Challenge, and Celebrate
A minimum of 8 convenings between August and November are convened by the Millenium Fellows on their respective campuses.
During these sessions, Campus Directors will lead you through the MCN Action Toolkit – an adaptive curriculum to help you reflect on core values, hone skills, and take informed action for UN goals.
As a campus hub, you will get exposed to a variety of elements during the Fellowship sessions as part of the MCN Action Toolkit:
- cultivating core values (empathy, humility, inclusion).
- honing hard skills (how to write a budget, create SMART goals).
- honing soft skills (team management, pitching your Project).
- peer to peer feedback – sharing best practices to help each other overcome obstacles to your Project and exploring further opportunities for collaboration.
You will take on the challenge – engaging in peer to peer feedback to support the Projects of your peers as you lead your own.
As a campus hub, you may also choose to take on a collective action – for example, working with your administration to update a campus sustainability plan.
If you have been an active Millennium Fellow and completed your Project, the MCN and UNAI will celebrate your work: you will earn a certificate recognizing successful completion of your Millennium Fellowship Project from United Nations Academic Impact and MCN.
STEP 3: Joining the Alumni Community

Eligibility
- Must be an undergraduate (UG) student in good academic standing for the duration of the program. Note: Graduate students (i.e. student pursuing a Masters, PhD degree) are not eligible.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- You make a commitment to convene in-person least eight times during the Millennium Fellowship (for 2022 the program will run August-November 2022) with your Campus Directors and other Fellows on your campus to share best practices and take collective action. Students have to meet on-campus, in-person for the Fellowship sessions. If you miss sessions, this is grounds for expulsion and the forfeiture of your designation as a Millennium Fellow. Campus Directors have additional responsibilities as noted in FAQs section on “Campus Director Applicants.”
- Commit to convene in-person least eight times with your Campus Directors and Fellows over the course of the program.
- Working or plan to work on a project between August-November 2022 that advances at least one Sustainable Development Goal
