Bengaluru City Police have filed a Zero FIR against an advocate accused of attempting to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai during court proceedings inside the Supreme Court. The registration was made at the Vidhan Soudha Police Station for subsequent transfer to the police station within whose limits the alleged incident occurred.
According to officials, the case invokes Sections 132 and 133 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, dealing with the use of criminal force against a public servant and acts intended to provoke a breach of peace. The complaint was moved by the All India Advocates’ Association, Bengaluru, which described the act as an insult to the judiciary and an attack on the rule of law.
The incident reportedly unfolded in Courtroom No. 1, where the accused advocate attempted to hurl an object toward the Bench. Security officials intervened swiftly and restrained him. Eyewitnesses claimed that the advocate shouted religious slogans while being escorted out by security personnel.
Following the disturbance, the Bar Council of India took disciplinary action by suspending the advocate, observing that such conduct gravely undermines professional ethics. The Delhi Police, after initial detention, released him as the Supreme Court’s administrative authorities chose not to press immediate criminal charges.
A petition has also been placed before the Attorney General seeking approval to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against the individual for his disruptive act within the Apex Court.
The episode drew condemnation from across the legal and political spectrum. Leaders including the Prime Minister, Opposition figures, and several Chief Ministers publicly denounced the behaviour and extended support to the Chief Justice. Prominent legal bodies such as the Supreme Court Bar Association, Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association, and various High Court Bar Associations also issued statements reaffirming their faith in judicial dignity and constitutional values.
