The Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Delhi High Court to grant bail to Preeti Chandra, the wife of Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra, who was embroiled in a money laundering case. The apex court's decision comes after Preeti Chandra spent more than 620 days in custody, prompting the court to take into consideration the prolonged detention.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, leading the bench, emphasized that the high court's exercise of discretion in favour of releasing Preeti Chandra on bail was pivotal in their decision. The bench, which also included Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, made it clear that they would not interfere with the order under Article 136 of the Constitution.

Under the conditions of her release, Preeti Chandra is required to remain within the bounds of the National Capital Region (NCR) and must dutifully report to the designated investigation officer at bi-weekly intervals. This precautionary measure aims to ensure her continued cooperation with the ongoing investigations.

The Supreme Court's directive comes in response to a plea lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), challenging the Delhi High Court's ruling issued on June 14. Notably, the apex court had previously stayed the high court's order on June 16, a move that had sparked considerable debate.

This development underscores the intricate legal process surrounding high-profile cases of financial impropriety. While the decision to grant bail signifies a significant step for Preeti Chandra's legal journey, it also raises broader questions about the intersection of personal liberty and financial misconduct allegations.
