May,31,2016:

Diesel vehicles ban is leading to loss of thousands of Jobs in Auto Sector.

The directives of the Apex Court are “senseless” and “without any scientific basis”, feels Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

He was refering to the Supreme Court ban on new diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of 2000 cc and above in the national Capital.

“Senseless judicial directions are being given without any scientific basis. Some people (Supreme Court) who do not understand science have begun interpreting it,” he observed at a public function in Panaji.

“We welcome the ban on old polluting vehicles, but why ban diesel vehicles with reduced pollution emission than even their petrol counterparts.

Now Car manufacturers like Mercedes Benz have stopped fresh investment in our Auto market as they do not see any logic in the Apex court’s decision,” he said.

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), a Auto Industry Body, observed that the diesel ban in Delhi, has cost nearly 5,000 jobs in the automobile sector alone in last 6 months. Additionally, it has also lead to a production loss of about 11,000 units of vehicles.

It warned that if the diesel ban had been extended across the country, it would lead to a further loss of production of one lakh vehicles over the same period and would eat away 47,000 jobs.

The 15 cities, identified in a new list by the Central Pollution Control Board, include Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Pune and the ban may be extended there.
