The Supreme Court has directed the CBI to investigate the 2016 suicide of the wife of an Additional District and Sessions Judge. The deceased’s family alleged that the Chhattisgarh Police, influenced by the judicial officer, prematurely closed the case despite multiple ante-mortem injuries on her body. The family, who reported the death as a result of the police dismissing it as suicide, claimed that their efforts to have an FIR registered were ignored by the police.
The deceased, an assistant district prosecution officer in Dantewada at the time of her marriage in February 2014, was alleged to have been killed in May 2016. Despite numerous complaints, the police failed to act. When her relatives sought a CBI investigation through the High Court, their petition remained pending for seven years before being dismissed. The High Court advised them to approach a magistrate under the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr. P.C) for FIR registration.
Challenging the High Court’s decision, the deceased’s mother and brother appealed to the Supreme Court, which overturned the High Court’s ruling. The Supreme Court has now instructed the CBI to conduct a prompt investigation and report its findings to the Court.
