The State Govt will bring a bill to repeal the Assam Madrassas Education (provincialization) Act of 1995 in the winter session of the assembly in the last week of Dec, which will pave the way for it to close down all Govt-run madrassas & Arabic colleges in the state.
On Sunday, the State Cabinet cleared the decks for dissolving the State Madrassa Board from the next academic session & all their academic & administrative authority will be transferred to the Directorate of Secondary Education. Teachers, who are teaching theological courses in the madrassas, will be trained to teach general subjects in the schools.
On Monday, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that “This will secularise the state education system. We are putting an end to the practice of using government funds for Islamic theological studies since pre-Indpendence days,”.
The State Minister said that “The schools will remain & will be converted to general schools & the word high madrassa will be removed along with the theological course (Quran course) from 189 such government-run schools. All theological courses will be stopped with effect from, April 1, 2021. SEBA will conduct the last High-Madrassa exam in 2021".
