On Friday, the Supreme Court described the illegal occupation of lands acquired for the Rajasthan Housing Board as an “absolute rank scam,” highlighting collusion from top to bottom. The observations came while hearing a plea by the Rajasthan government challenging a high court order.
The High Court had stayed the state government’s order aimed at regularising illegal colonies on the Housing Board land. It also directed the demolition of unauthorised constructions and action against officials who allowed them, noting that around 5,000 houses were involved.
During the hearing, the bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta observed that previous high court orders had repeatedly prohibited such regularisation. Justice Mehta noted the scale of the scam was staggering, with land grabbers, property dealers, and influential people encroaching upon Housing Board lands. The bench said the matter was of such magnitude that we can’t even start thinking of its full implications.
The Supreme Court finally allowed the Rajasthan government to withdraw its plea, granting liberty to approach the high court for appropriate relief. The bench also warned that if proper instructions were not taken, it could intervene directly to ensure demolition of illegal constructions.
