A commotion broke out inside the 6th Additional District and Sessions Court, Chennai, when Karukka Vinoth, convicted in the Raj Bhavan petrol bomb incident, attempted to throw a shoe at the presiding Sessions Judge, Pandiarajan. The outburst allegedly stemmed from Vinoth’s dissatisfaction with the sentence imposed on him by the Special NIA Court a day earlier.
Vinoth had been produced before the Sessions Court in connection with a separate case involving an attempted attack at a TASMAC outlet. During the proceedings, he suddenly tried to hurl a shoe at the judge. Court security personnel immediately intervened, restrained him, and escorted him out of the courtroom.
Following the disturbance, the Judge observed that in matters involving similarly volatile accused persons, production through video-conferencing may be considered to ensure safety within court premises.
The petrol bomb attack on the Raj Bhavan took place in 2023, when Vinoth allegedly targeted the Governor’s residence after expressing dissatisfaction over the Governor’s refusal to release certain prisoners. Given the nature of the attack and its security implications, the case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency.
The NIA charged Vinoth under multiple provisions, including Sections 124, 379, 436, 353 and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992.
After analysing the evidence, the Special Court for NIA Cases at Poonamallee held Vinoth guilty and sentenced him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹5,000.
