New Delhi: Claiming that 51% of the suicides among men accused of sexual assault were due to false allegations being levelled against them, a rights NGO named Purush Ayog held a demonstration at India Gate on Monday, demanding justice for men facing unsubstantiated accusations of sexual assault.

The demonstrators, citing the recent case involving the Chief Justice of India, plan to start a movement called #mentoo and demanded that the identity of the accused men be kept under wraps until all legal proceedings were concluded.

The protestors, consisting of lawyers and men’s rights activists, led by Purush Ayog head Barkha Trehan, gathered on Rajpath with placards demanding probes against women who register cases of sexual assault against men only to withdraw their cases when asked to appear before a magistrate.

Trehan demanded a review of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act to ensure that the name of the accused would not be revealed until the case was concluded either way.

Trehan cited the case of the Chief Justice of India to say why such a provision was warranted. She said even after the CJI was given a clean chit by the Supreme Court’s internal committee, he was still being maligned by society.

“Even before a probe has been completed, people are ready to believe that a person is actually guilty of the charges pressed against him. Though that person may later be proven to be innocent, his image is already tarnished for a lifetime by then,” she said.
