In a recent update provided to the Supreme Court, the Manipur government, under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, revealed that the violence in the state over the past two months has resulted in the tragic loss of 142 lives.
As part of their efforts to bring the situation under control, approximately 5,995 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed, and 6,745 individuals have been taken into custody.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the state government has transferred six cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further examination. The violence has seen around 5,000 incidents of arson, with Imphal East and Imphal West districts experiencing the highest number of casualties.
In their report, the government outlined the measures they have implemented to maintain law and order. Daily security reviews are being conducted, and a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been established to effectively handle any emergencies that may arise. To bolster peacekeeping efforts, the state government has deployed 124 paramilitary forces companies and 184 Army columns across the affected areas.
Additionally, the government provided an update on their initiatives to restore normalcy in the state. They are actively working to connect students residing in relief camps with nearby schools to ensure uninterrupted education. Furthermore, competitive exams have been conducted within the state as part of its commitment to maintaining stability and normalcy.
Addressing the internet ban, the state government shared their intention to grant conditional relaxation on a case-by-case basis. Internet connectivity has been suspended for the past two months, and the government is evaluating the local conditions to determine the appropriate duration for curfew relaxation.
During the court proceedings, the state government made an earnest appeal to the petitioners, requesting them not to mention specific tribes during their arguments. They emphasized that singling out tribes could have adverse effects on the ground situation and potentially exacerbate tensions.
In response to the Supreme Court's request, the Manipur government filed an updated report detailing the steps taken to halt the violence and facilitate the rehabilitation of those affected.
