Former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD supremo, Lalu Prasad Yadav, has strongly opposed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)'s plea to cancel his bail in a fodder scam case.

Yadav filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, asserting that the CBI's stance was flawed and contradicted established legal principles. The RJD leader highlighted his prolonged period in custody, his senior citizen status, and his health conditions, including age-related ailments and co-morbidities.

Yadav argued that the CBI's plea failed to acknowledge the settled legal principle that requires "overwhelming circumstances necessary to reverse an order granting bail". He emphasized that he had already spent 30 months in custody and that the CBI's arguments were unfounded and untenable.

Furthermore, Yadav noted that he had undergone significant surgical interventions, including a kidney transplant in December 2022. Given his frail health condition, he urged the court not to revoke the bail order, as it would serve no useful purpose and could adversely affect his well-being.

The Supreme Court had earlier agreed to hear the CBI's plea on August 25. The plea challenges the Jharkhand High Court's decision to grant bail to Yadav in four cases related to the multi-crore fodder scam, which involves allegations of embezzlement from various government treasuries through fake bills and transactions.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is scheduled to hear the matter.
