Recently, the High Court of Karnataka was moved by former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who has filed an appeal challenging his conviction and life sentence in a rape case.

Revanna, the ex-MP from Hassan, was convicted on August 2 by a special court in Bengaluru for repeatedly raping his domestic help at his Holenarasipur farmhouse and a house in Banashankari, Bengaluru. He was also held guilty of recording videos of the assaults.

The trial court, presided over by Special Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat, had sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.11.5 lakh, directing that Rs.11.25 lakh from the amount be paid as compensation to the survivor. This conviction is among four sexual assault cases pending against him.

In his appeal, Revanna contended that there were contradictions between the survivor’s initial complaint and her later testimony. He further alleged that police had coerced the survivor into filing the complaint and questioned the credibility of forensic evidence, including stains found on a bed years after the alleged incidents.

Arguing that the prosecution’s case was riddled with inconsistencies and procedural lapses, Revanna urged the High Court to quash the conviction and set aside the trial court’s verdict.

The High Court is yet to take up the appeal for a hearing.
