On Monday, the Gujarat High Court pulled up the Dwarka Municipality over the growing danger posed by stray cattle and bulls roaming freely across the town, observing that the issue has now become a serious public safety concern. While hearing a Public Interest Litigation alleging that multiple people have lost their lives after collisions with wandering cattle, a division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice DN Ray directed the Chief Officer of Dwarka Nagarpalika to explain, through an affidavit, the concrete steps taken so far to address the situation.
The Petitioner drew the Court’s attention to the persistent presence of stray bovines on busy streets and public spaces, claiming that nearly 2,000 bulls roam unchecked in Dwarka an important religious destination that attracts tourists from across the country. The Bench also recorded that several newspaper reports have repeatedly highlighted fatal incidents involving unsuspecting residents being attacked or struck by such animals.
Appearing for the municipality, counsel submitted that periodic drives are carried out to capture stray bulls, which are subsequently relocated to local gaushalas. However, the Court sought a more detailed and accountable response, granting the municipality time to file its affidavit outlining the measures implemented and the plan ahead.
