In a unique initiative, judges of Madhya Pradesh high court have decided to donate a minimum of Rs 5,000 each from their monthly salary to help the people in need.
Chief Justice of MP high court, Justice R V Malimath announced the decision during his address on the Independence Day after hoisting the national flag in the presence of fellow judges, lawyers and distinguished people from different walks of life in a function at the high court building in Jabalpur.
The Chief Justice, while unveiling the initiative called 'Boond', said it reflects the judiciary's commitment to extending beyond legal boundaries and it's a follow up of MP high court's full court resolution adopted on August 12, 2023 in which the judges of the high court have committed to contribute a sum of minimum Rs. 5000 per month to be utilised for the upliftment of the poorest of the poor in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Chief Justice said that this collective effort is expected to generate a substantial amount, which will be utilised for the direct benefit of those in need.
In his address, the Chief Justice urged citizens to remember the sacrifices of the past, uphold the principles of freedom, and contribute to the growth of the nation. The chief justice began by paying homage to the courageous men and women who fearlessly fought for India's Independence, emphasising their unwavering. dedication to the principles they believed in.
He urged everyone to reflect on the sacrifices made and ensure that the values for which the freedom fighters stood remain alive in the country's ethos.
Highlighting the pivotal role of the judiciary in India's development, the chief justice underlined the importance of a strong and independent judicial system. He recalled, during the freedom struggle advocates were prominent freedom fighters likewise, today legal professionals must come forward to protect and strengthen the institution.
Emphasising that the strength of the country is deeply intertwined with the strength of its key organs, including the executive, the judiciary, and the legislature, the chief justice highlighted the interconnectedness of the Bar and the Bench, stressing that both sides play an essential role in upholding justice. He backed the mutual respect and trust between the two, calling for unity and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes.
Chief Justice Malimath urged individuals to shift from a self-centered attitude to a collective commitment to the betterment of the institution and the nation.
He addressed fellow members of the judiciary by invoking Mahatma Gandhi "The True measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members", encouraging them to extend their contribution beyond the judicial sphere to make an impact in the lives of vulnerable members of the society.
The funds raised through Boond will be used to provide essential commodities such as food, water, clothing, and assistance during exigencies. The initiative, Chief Justice Malimath stressed, is not a charity but a moral obligation to make a positive impact on society.
In closing, the chief justice called for unity, determination, and a focus on shared values and principles. He emphasised that true greatness is not achieved by birth but by upholding values, cherishing principles, and espousing noble causes.
