The Bombay High Court has issued notices to the Union Government of India, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Confidence Petroleum India Limited in a petition filed by six LPG distributors alleging insufficient supply of domestic cooking gas cylinders. The court’s intervention comes amid claims that domestic demand is not being adequately met despite policy directions prioritising household LPG supply.
The plea was heard by a bench comprising Justice Anil S. Kilor and Justice Raj D. Wakode after six distributors associated with Confidence Petroleum India Limited approached the court seeking directions to increase the allocation of domestic LPG cylinders. According to the petition, the distributors repeatedly urged the company to strengthen domestic supply and pause exports in light of emerging shortages, but their representations allegedly remained unaddressed.
The petition further pointed to disruptions in global crude movement due to the Iran–Israel conflict, which reportedly affected LPG production and distribution from countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, intensifying supply constraints.
Taking note of the allegations, the bench directed the concerned authorities to respond to the petition while emphasizing adherence to government policy on LPG distribution. The court observed that the storage and supply of domestic cylinders must align with the existing policy framework, stating that supply should be maintained “strictly as per the Government’s policy.”
The matter has been scheduled for further consideration next week, while the court continues to examine whether the alleged supply imbalance requires judicial directions.
