Today, the Delhi High Court stepped in to examine objections raised against a forthcoming web series allegedly inspired by the life of slain gangster Vikas Dubey, just days ahead of its scheduled digital release.

The controversy centres around a web series titled “UP 77”, slated to premiere on December 25 on the Waves OTT platform. The series is purportedly based on the life of gangster Vikas Dubey, who was killed in a police encounter in July 2020 while being transported from Ujjain to Kanpur.

A petition was filed before the High Court by Dubey’s wife, Richa Dubey, objecting to the release of the series. Justice Sachin Datta issued notice to the Union Government, the OTT platform, and the makers of the web show, seeking their response. The matter is scheduled to be heard.

The Petitioner contended that the web series delves into her private and marital life without her consent and portrays events in a fictionalised, exaggerated, and sensational manner solely for commercial exploitation. She further submitted that her minor sons continue to face emotional, psychological, and social distress following their father’s death and have deliberately stayed away from public attention. It was argued that the proposed release could reopen past trauma, expose the family to public ridicule, permanently harm their dignity, and potentially endanger their safety and social standing.

The Court, while not expressing any opinion on the merits of the case at this stage, considered the plea significant enough to warrant a response from all concerned stakeholders, particularly in light of the allegations relating to privacy, dignity, and potential harm to the petitioner and her children.

Issuing notice in the matter, the Delhi High Court directed the Union Government, the OTT platform, and the content creators to respond. The case has been listed for further hearing, and the Court is yet to decide on the Petitioner’s request to restrain the release of the web series.
