After he got a clean chit in both Sohrabuddin Shaikh-Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat encounter cases, Ex-IPS officer DG Vanzara was given the long-awaited promotion of Inspector General of Police ( IGP) with effect from Sept 29, 2007. Vanzara will get arrears from the deemed date of the promotion.

On Tuesday, the former IPS officer tweeted about his post-retirement promotion also tagging the order from the Govt.

On Wednesday, DG Vanzara tod news agency that “God is great. I had done nothing wrong but only protected Gujarat from terrorism".

DG Vanzara, 66, who retired in May 2014 while he was in Sabarmati Central Jail in connection with the Ishrat encounter case, said he is hopeful that he will soon get his ‘due’ promotion for the rank of ADGP.

He in his tweet thanked both Central & State Govt for the promotion.

His son Prithviraj Vanzara also tweeted & expressed his pleasure that his father got what he deserved. He also expressed immense pleasure & gratitude towards the Govts.

Vanzara, who had joined the Police service as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in 1980, was promoted as an IPS officer in 1987. He served as Deputy Commissioner of Police of Ahmedabad crime branch & was later promoted as DIG of the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) in Ahmedabad. At the time of his arrest on April 24, 2007, he was posted as the Border Range of Kutch & Banaskantha.

Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed in Nov 2005 & Tulsiram Prajapati was shot dead in Dec 2006. Vanzara was arrested in both these cases by the state CID (crime). Later, these cases were handed over to CBI for further probe & merged together. While in prison, Vanzara was arrested again by CBI in another encounter case in which Mumbai-based 19-year-old girl Ishrat Jahan, Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana & Zishan Johar were killed in June 2004.
