Justice Tarun Chatterjee, a former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, has passed away. Born on January 14, 1945, he was the son of the late Justice Purshottam Chatterjee, a former Judge of the Calcutta High Court and a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court. Justice Tarun Chatterjee enrolled as an Advocate in 1970 and practised in the Calcutta High Court, handling cases in civil, criminal, and revenue matters.

On August 6, 1990, he was appointed as a permanent Judge in the Calcutta High Court, where he served with distinction. Subsequently, on January 31, 2003, he took oath as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Tarun Chatterjee was then elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on August 27, 2004, where he served until his retirement on January 14, 2010. His tenure on the apex court bench marked his contribution to the Indian judicial system.

Following his retirement, Justice Chatterjee was appointed as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh State Human Rights Commission in October 2013, where he continued to serve and make valuable contributions in the field of human rights.

The passing of Justice Tarun Chatterjee is a great loss to the legal fraternity and the nation as a whole. His dedication to the pursuit of justice and his significant contributions to the Indian judiciary will be remembered and cherished.
