Loni Kalbhor police have registered a case against a 32-year-old woman for allegedly impersonating a lawyer and cheating a homemaker of ₹5.3 lakh. The accused reportedly promised legal representation in a domestic violence case but failed to appear in Court or take any legal steps.
The complaint was lodged by a Lohiyanagar resident, who claimed that between November 2022 and March 2023, the woman assured her legal assistance in a case filed by her daughter-in-law.
However, after receiving the money, the accused neither filed any legal documents nor appeared before the Court.
According to Sub-Inspector Pooja Mali, preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had duped at least two more individuals similarly, defrauding them of amounts between ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakh.
“She targets individuals visiting the police station for case-related matters, gains their trust by posing as a lawyer, and collects money under the pretext of legal representation,” Mali said.
When questioned, the woman failed to produce her Sanad—the mandatory license to practice law. The police have contacted the Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa to verify her credentials and are also seeking information about her previous alleged offenses in the Loni Kalbhor area.
“She moves around police stations, approaches vulnerable individuals summoned for questioning, and offers to represent them legally. However, she never files documents or fights the cases,” Mali added.
An investigation is underway, and further victims are encouraged to come forward.
