Justice Gogoi in an interview to Times Now appealed to citizens of India that, "Be Responsible, who you are, trust your judges, the journalists have a important duty, as they mould public opinion, the journalists should be responsible and non-partisan like judges".
Justice Ranjan Gogoi further stated that,"Comments made by Justice Katju are irrelevant, as far as Justice Lokur and Justice Kurien Joseph are considered, who were my good friends - they have their own problems; failed ambitions.
As far as ‘failed ambitions’ are concerned, that is a matter of perception - like the perception of Justice Kurian and Justice Lokur that my accepting the nomination is the downfall of the judiciary. These are perceptions.
As far as Justice AP Shah is concerned "the champion of independence of judiciary" there are three reasons why his name was not recommended for Supreme Court first, deals with a filmstar other deal with auction of properties worth hundreds of crore were sold for a song.
Today, they question independence of judiciary, All these things can be checked by filing RTI. What they have said are their perceptions, but these things are matter of record".
Justice Gogoi further added that,"I don't consider nomination to Rajya Sabha as post retirement employment, if there was a requirement there are various post like Chariman of Law Commission, NCLAT etc, its a service to the country to which one is called for by the President of India, You don't refuse the President".
He further added that,"Constitutional Scheme is such that President acts on aid and advice of Ministers.
The Chief Justice is appointed by President after approval of the Prime Minister of India, so does it become appointment made by Prime Minister. He is representative of people elected by 1.3 Billion people.
It is a different that whether you like him or not and his policies. If you dont't like the Constitutional Scheme change it".
Justice Gogoi added,“Is the nomination to the Rajya Sabha a post retirement employment? I’m really sorry, this is not correct. What are these values? Where are these ideas coming from? You attend sessions 60 days in a year... your package is less or equivalent to the post retirement package of a CJI. You get accommodation that is four stages below what you got as a CJI - and then you call it a post retirement package and a benefit conferred for judgments written by the Chief Justice of India? This is a view that only the enemies of this country can take.”
He concluded by stating that,"I see great hope for the country, let's carry it forward".
