The Delhi High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of an incident in which female students from Delhi University's Bharati College were secretly filmed in a washroom while changing costumes during the "Rendezvous" fest organized by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi).
HC Bench noted that the incident raised concerns about security breaches during college festivals and highlighted the need for adequate security measures to protect female attendees.
The incident occurred on October 6, and the individual responsible for secretly filming the students was identified as a member of IIT Delhi's housekeeping staff. High Court observed that the incident had left the victims distraught and raised concerns about the misuse of the videos.
The court also referred to a previous order that emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities and the police to enhance security measures during college festivals.
The Delhi Police informed the court that a case had been registered under Section 354C of the Indian Penal Code, and the accused was in judicial custody. The court issued notices to Delhi University, IIT Delhi, and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, directing them to submit reports indicating their existing security policies during college festivals.
The court also directed the investigating officer to exercise discretion during the investigation to protect the anonymity of the women involved and to take prompt steps to prevent the dissemination of the photographs and videos recorded by the accused on social media platforms.
