The Central Government of India has assented to the appointment of two advocates, Amitabh Kumar Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla, as judges of the Allahabad High Court. The appointments were confirmed by Union Minister of State for Law & Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, through a post on his official X handle on September 6.

Their names had been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium earlier this year, in March. The Allahabad High Court currently has 84 sitting judges, far below its sanctioned strength of 160, highlighting the urgent need for new appointments.

Recently, the Collegium had proposed 26 additional appointments, which are still awaiting government clearance. The induction of the two new judges is expected to help ease the workload of the high court and strengthen its functioning.
