On Thursday, the 2 brothers who were arrested for allegedly killing their stepmother & 83-year-old grandfather in the Bhognipur area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district were upset with their father’s third marriage, police said.

The accused, Lalit Dwivedi (42) & Akshat (20), are sons of 62-year-old Vimal Dwivedi, a retired Govt Teacher, from his first & second marriages, respectively, it is learnt.

They were unhappy about Vimal’s third marriage to Kushbhoo Awasthi (28), & killed their grandfather Ram Prakash as he supported their father, the police said.

On Friday, the accused were produced in a local court that sent them to judicial custody.

According to the police, a local resident went to Ram Prakash’s house on Thursday morning to find him, his father & Kushboo lying in a pool of blood. When the police took the victims to a hospital, Ram Prakash & Kushboo were declared brought dead. Vimal, who sustained critical injuries on his head, was sent to Kanpur for treatment.

The police said that Vimal married Munni Devi, his second wife, a few years after his first wife died in the 1990s. “Around a year ago, Vimal started a relationship with Kushboo Awasthi. Around two months ago he married Kushboo at a local court & brought her home, leading to a dispute in the family. The family members were also angry with him for spending his savings on Kushboo,” said a police officer.

According to the police, on the intervening night of Wednesday & Thursday, the two brothers attacked their father, stepmother & grandfather with a sharp-edged weapon when they were asleep. Munni Devi was not present at the house at the time of the incident.

Kanpur Dehat SSP BBGTS Murthy said the accused were arrested while trying to flee from the area.
