On Friday, chaos erupted inside a family court in Surat after a 75-year-old Ayurvedic doctor allegedly hurled acid at his wife during an ongoing maintenance case hearing, in full view of the presiding judge. The shocking attack left the woman with serious injuries and triggered fresh concerns about security inside court premises, particularly in sensitive family disputes.
The incident occurred on the fifth floor of the Surat District Seva Sadan complex while proceedings in a long-running maintenance dispute between Vinod Bhanushali and his 61-year-old wife, Shardaben Bhanushali, were underway. According to preliminary information, the couple has been engaged in litigation since 2007. The accused allegedly flung acid at his wife, causing severe injuries to her head and eye.
Lawyers and court staff rushed to assist as the injured woman was taken to a private hospital for urgent treatment. In a dramatic turn, the accused reportedly consumed poison shortly after the attack in an apparent suicide attempt and was also shifted to a hospital. Court security personnel detained him at the spot before police arrived.
Although the attack occurred during live court proceedings, authorities are now examining the broader circumstances that allowed the incident to unfold inside the courtroom itself. Police officials confirmed that the accused had earlier been involved in a violent altercation in the same legal dispute, stating that an earlier case had been registered when he allegedly attempted to assault his wife with a knife inside court premises several years ago.
Investigators have begun a detailed inquiry into the latest attack, while also reviewing the sequence of events that led to the courtroom assault. One official confirmed that “the accused was detained immediately after the incident and a detailed investigation is underway.”
