On Monday, the Delhi High Court granted a four-week extension of parole to convict Praveen Rana, enabling him to restore and protect his agricultural land devastated by recent floods. The court observed that his continued presence was essential for his family’s survival.

Justice Arun Monga observed that Rana’s farmland, he sole source of livelihood for his widowed mother and two minor children, had been completely inundated during the heavy rains of June 2025, destroying seasonal crops. With waters now receding, urgent measures were required to restore cultivation, including arranging finances, procuring fertilizers and pesticides, and supervising the recovery process.

The petitioner argued that the family’s sustenance and his children’s education depended entirely on the farmland, making his continued presence indispensable. His counsel added that parole was crucial for procuring agricultural inputs and ensuring productivity following the devastating crop loss.

Opposing the plea, the State contended that Rana’s belated approach to the Court undermined his conduct. However, the Court rejected the objection, terming the floods “an act of God” and noting that parole extension was justified to secure the family’s livelihood.

The Court clarified that the relief would be treated as a second parole under the jail manual. Rana will continue on parole for another four weeks under the same terms and conditions as earlier.
