Recently, the Supreme Court deferred hearing former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar’s appeal against his life sentence in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, leaving several questions about the convictions and the High Court’s reasoning pending. The Top Court has asked the parties to clarify key aspects of the allegations and witness accounts, signaling a detailed scrutiny of the case before any final decision.
The case involves the killing of Sikhs and the destruction of property during the 1984 riots in Delhi. While Kumar and his co-accused had been convicted by the High Court, the Supreme Court’s review could revisit crucial evidence and legal findings that led to their life sentences.
Besides Kumar, appeals of other co-convicts are also under consideration, keeping the focus on one of the most notorious episodes of communal violence in the country. The Supreme Court will take up the matter after its Diwali break, which begins on October 20, with proceedings set to resume on October 27, leaving the final outcome uncertain.
