Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, pleaded guilty to federal tax charges, avoiding what could have been a high-profile trail just weeks before the upcoming U.S. presidential election. The charges stem from his failure to pay $1.4 million in taxes while spending lavishly on drugs, luxury items, and services from escorts.
Biden, who had initially been set to stand trial in a Los Angeles federal court, instead admitted guilt to all nine charges against him. U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi informed Biden that he could face up to 17 years in prison and a potential fine of up to $450,000. Sentencing has been scheduled for December 16.
Most defendants who plead guilty in criminal cases usually do so with an agreement in place with prosecutors, no such arrangement was reached in Biden’s case. Earlier in the day, he attempted to enter an “Alford plea”, in which a defendant maintains innocence while acknowledging sufficient evidence for conviction. Prosecutors rejected the plea, and Biden’s legal team eventually agreed to a standard guilty plea without any prior agreement on a reduced sentence.
Biden stated that his decision to plead guilty was made to protect his family from the distress of a public trial that would have exposed difficult details about his struggles with drug addiction. He added that he has since repaid his outstanding taxes. The guilty plea means a lengthy trail will be avoided at a crucial time for U.S. politics, with voters set to choose between Vice President Kamla Harris and former President Donald Trump in the presidential election on November 5. The trial, had it gone forward, would have unfolded during the height of the campaign.
The charges cover a period from 2016 to 2019 when Biden failed to pay taxes while allegedly spending heavily on luxury goods and personal indulgences. The case could have also brought renewed scrutiny to his work with Burisma, a Ukrainian natural gas company, and other business dealings while his father served as vice president. Investigations by Congress have so far not directly linked President Biden to any improper actions.
Hunter Biden is also appealing a separate conviction in Delaware for purchasing a firearm while under the influence of drugs, which could complicate his sentencing in the tax case due to his status as a repeat offender. The White House has reiterated that President Biden will not pardon his son.
