Brothers Robert and Aron Marderosian have filed a lawsuit against NBC, U.S. Figure Skating, and figure skaters Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier accusing them of violating their copyrights by making use of their version of most loved “House of the Rising Sun” at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics without any sort of authorization. Both brothers are professionally famous as Heavy Young Heathens.
The brothers said, “Knierim and Frazier skated to our version of the traditional folk song, used in a trailer for the 2016 film “The Magnificent Seven” and a commercial for Ford Motor Co, without our permission, and NBC is also accused of copyright infringement by broadcasting the same.” It is alleged that the skaters used their brother’s song in their short program, in one of their performances leading to the U.S. silver medal in the team figure skating event.
It is not the first time that the brothers are taking such action; they previously also accused several other big companies of misusing their work without any permission including allegations against Fox Sports, Discovery Inc, and Warner Brothers that later they settled out of the court. Heavy Young Heathens are famous for their music compositions and songs which also appeared in huge TV shows including The Simpsons, ads for Starbucks, and trailers for movies like Deadpool.
The musicians are being represented by Mick Marderosian (father of musicians) & Heather Cohen of Marderosian & Cohen. NBC, U.S. Figure Skating, and the skaters' agent, David Baden of IMG, preferred to stitch their Lipson a request for comment. The lawsuit said, “House of the Rising Sun is a very valuable licensing asset for Heavy Young Heathens, and seek the court for directions on money damages, and to block any future infringement by the defendants.”
