The Madras High Court has issued a directive to the police to take immediate action against individuals causing disturbances at an old age home in the city. The court disposed of a petition filed by M/s Athulya Assisted Living Pvt. Ltd., and Justice N Anand Venkatesh ordered the Inspector of Police, Pallavaram Police Station, to ensure the safety and uninterrupted functioning of the Old Age Home. The petitioner had expressed concerns about threats and interference from people in the vicinity, even after filing a police complaint.
Justice Venkatesh emphasized that if the home is operating with the necessary license and adhering to the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rules, 2009, no one should be allowed to disrupt its operations or pose a threat.
In a separate matter, a plea has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking the establishment of government-run Old Age homes in every district of Tamil Nadu in accordance with Section 19(1) of The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007. The petitioner, Pascal Sasi, a law student, highlighted the State's failure to implement the law and provide proper shelter for indigent senior citizens. The court issued a notice to the State and scheduled the hearing for July 31.
Pascal's plea highlighted that the government's inaction has led to concerns about mismanagement and the overall safety and welfare of senior citizens in privately run institutions. He urged authorities to take necessary steps to set up government-run homes as per the Act and implement the Draft Policy on Senior Citizen Welfare 2022.
