Rs. 16 Lakh broke the previous record of Rs 12.5 lakh.
A vanity plate bearing the car registration number '0001' in Delhi was bought at a recent auction for Rs 16 lakh, highest amount paid to date for a fancy number.
City Government's Transport Department received a windfall last week when the hospitality firm based in national capital paid amount for the number in an e-auction.
Delhites, it appears, are not averse to paying cost of a luxury car just to get a registration number of their choice.
Amount paid last week broke previous record of Rs 12.5 lakh, set in September 2014 when the sugar manufacturing company had bid for registration number '0001', which has easily been most sought after since Transport Department started the e-auctioning of the fancy registration numbers in 2014.
From 2014 to date, Department has earned nearly Rs 1.83 crore just by e-auctioning number "0001" in different series (different strings of the alphabets).
Availability of coveted number is now scarce as Department has run out now scarce as Department has run out of series with which number can be provided.
"Second most-sought-after number is 0009, followed by 0007, as these numbers are considered lucky by many," added an official.
Earlier, the allotment of the fancy registration numbers, popularly known as the VIP numbers, was purely discretionary. In the 2014, Delhi Government had framed the rules wherein the minimum reserve price for these numbers was fixed and it was decided to the conduct e-auctions for these numbers.
