About 100 district court complexes in the country out of 665 have no toilets for women. & those which have washrooms, only 40% are fully functional, according to a latest survey of all the district courts across the country. Half of the district courts in the country had no designated waiting areas while only 39% were full service court complexes with post office, bank branch, canteen, photocopier, typist & notaries despite the fact that government has spent close to over Rs 7,000 crore in modernising & giving litigants world class court complexes.
“Only 40% of the court complexes have fully-functioning washrooms. Goa, Jharkhand, UP and Mizoram had the least number of court complexes with functional washrooms. At least 100 district court complexes across the country don’t even have a washroom for women,” revealed the survey conducted by Vidhi, a Delhi-based think tank on judicial reforms.
The study, which was released on Thursday, has interviewed 6,650 litigants at these court complexes & found that waiting area is a basic service to be provided by the government for litigants which was missing in at least 46% of the court complexes. “Despite being a basic requirement, only 54% or 361 district court complexes had designated waiting areas,” the survey said.
The survey also talks about poor state of security features at these court complexes. “Only 11% of the court complexes had a working baggage scanning facility,” the survey pointed out. It found that about 30% complexes had no fire extinguishers while only 48% had emergency exit signs displayed for evacuation during emergency.
