The doctrine will facilitate a framework for joint operations across all the domains such as land, air, sea, space and cyber-space.

India needs to systematically prepare for "emerging triad" of space, cyberspace and special operations in support of the military operations, even as it builds an integrated land-air-sea war fighting machinery, maintains credible nuclear deterrence and guards against unconventional threats.

This, in essence, is underlying theme of "Joint Doctrine of Indian Armed Forces" released by the Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee Admiral Sunil Lanba, in  presence of Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa and General Bipin Rawat.

TOI was first to report last week that new doctrine stresses need for Army, Navy and IAF to plan and work together to effectively tackle entire spectrum of conflict, ranging from full-blown conventional wars to irregular and hybrid warfare.

While war for territory paradigm is diminishing around globe, Doctrine says it remains relevant for  the India due to disputed borders with China and Pakistan.

"Strategic interests in the regions along our northern, western and eastern borders and sensitivities along Line of Control (with Pakistan) and Line of Actual Control (with China) are to be protected with effective deterrent capabilities," states the doctrine.

"India's security environment is impacted by number of global and regional issues and challenges. These are currently manifesting as geopolitical re-balancing, increasing the assertiveness by emerging powers, regional instabilities and spread of radicalism. Need to address consequences of the instability and the volatility in parts of our extended and immediate neighbourhood, hence, remains a priority," it further added.

As for space, cyber-space and the special operations, Government is yet to even approve truncated Tri-Service Organizations proposed to handle these critical domains of modern day warfare.

Doctrine says "initial steps" to develop triad through creation of the Defence Cyber Agency, the Defence Space Agency and the Special Operations Division are now underway.
