On Wednesday, a man trying to cancel an order made through a food delivery app by using a toll-free number was cheated of Rs 4 lakh in Virat Khand area of Gomtinagar.
It was later found that the toll-free number was fake.

The victim, who didn't wish to be named, said he ordered food through a food delivery app but when the company didn't deliver as per his expectation, he searched the customer care number on the internet.

He said his call was received by a man who introduced himself as the company's representative & asked him to install an app & login to his savings bank account.

He said, "As soon as I entered my bank details in the app, I received a one-time password (OTP). The caller asked me to enter the OTP to get the refund. However, within minutes Rs 4 lakh was debited from my bank account".

Police said the app, which the cyber fraudster asked the victim to install, allowed remote access of mobile phone to him. Getting access to his phone, the scammer withdrew money from the account.
"We are taking the help of cyber cell to trace the miscreant," said, Amit Kumar Dubey, SHO, Gomtinagar.
