July 13, 2017:

India's ranked at 39, with people averaging only 4,297 steps per day.

If given a choice to either drive or walk, most Indians are lazy enough to opt to drive a car irrespective of the distance. Now a study has shown that we're among the laziest countries in the world.

That is among the findings of a study by the Stanford University researchers taking help of step-counters installed in most smartphones to track the walking activity of about 7,00,000 people in 46 countries around the world.

According to the study published in the journal Nature, the Least Lazy are the Chinese, particularly those in Hong Kong, where people averaged 6,880 steps per day.

The Worst nation was Indonesia, where people walked nearly half as much as Chinese, averaging just 3,513 steps a day. The worldwide avg. is 4,961 steps, with Americans walking an average 4,774 steps a day.

The top half of the chart includes Hong Kong, China, Ukraine & Japan walking over 6,000 steps every day; while countries at the bottom of the rung include Malaysia, Saudi Arabia & Indonesia.

The data shows that the Indian women walk even less than the Indian men. While Indian men have registered 4,606 daily, women manage to walk barely 3,684 steps.

"At least 10,000 steps required a day to remain fit," suggests Delhi-based dietitian Ritika Samaddar. "But you need to be active throughout the day."
